Nana Bosomprah - Goasohene
In Goaso, Ahafo Region, a heated dispute over royalty has erupted between the former Omanhene, Nana Agyei Ampofo, and the current Omanhene, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah. Nana Ampofo, a 77-year-old lawyer, and former Member of the Council of State, claims his royal status qualifies him for the stool, but Nana Bosomprah, 58, disputes this.
Nana Ampofo relinquished the stool in 2000 amidst a chieftaincy dispute, later taken before Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Nana Bosomprah, a driver with the Ghana Cocoa Board, assumed the position in 2008. Tensions escalated on January 12, 2024, when Nana Ampofo responded to an alleged statement by Nana Bosomprah, asserting he wasn't a royal and had signed a letter to that effect.
Nana Ampofo emphasized his royal lineage and voluntary abdication, accusing Nana Bosomprah of provocation and autocratic rule. He also mentioned an attempted assassination in Kumasi during the chieftaincy dispute, implicating those close to Nana Bosomprah.
In response, Nana Bosomprah, during a subsequent news conference, maintained that Nana Ampofo isn't a royal. While denying explicitly stating Nana Ampofo wrote a disqualifying letter, he claimed copies existed in the town. According to Asante tradition, the Goasohene is the Asantehene's chief palm wine tapper, a position Nana Bosomprah asserted belongs exclusively to his family. He challenged Nana Ampofo to trace his lineage to contest this assertion.
